What to Expect at Your First Sewing Class

Thinking of learning to sew but feeling a little intimidated? You’re not alone! Starting something new can feel daunting, especially when sewing machines, bobbins, and seam allowances are involved. But don’t worry - if you’re joining our Sewing for Beginners class, you’re in good hands.

Whether you’ve never touched a machine before or it’s been years since you last tried, here’s exactly what to expect from your first class.

🧵 You Don’t Need Any Experience

Seriously - none. In fact, we actually prefer it when you come in as a total blank canvas. That way, you’ll learn good habits right from the start, no unlearning, and no confusion. This class is designed for absolute beginners, and you won’t be expected to know anything at all.

We’ll walk you through everything step by step, from threading the machine to sewing straight lines and understanding seam allowances. Most people who join haven’t sewn since high school, so if that’s you, you’re in very good company.

👋 What Happens When You Arrive

When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by your friendly teacher and welcomed into the studio. We’ll check your name off the list and guide you to the back of the shop where you can hang your coat and leave your bag on our coat rack. Then it’s onto the fun part - choosing your fabric!

We’ve got a beautiful range of colours, patterns, and prints to choose from , and yes, it’s all included in your class price. If you feel like treating yourself to something a little extra, you can browse our luxury fabrics and upgrade for a small fee.

Once you’ve chosen your fabric, you’ll give it a quick press with the iron and then help yourself to some tea, coffee or a cookie before we get started.

When everyone’s settled, your teacher will officially kick things off by introducing themselves again, show you where everything is, and guide the group through the project for the day (a cushion cover!). You’ll start by cutting your fabric using our pre-made pattern, and then you’ll be introduced to the sewing machine.

We’ll walk you through how the machine works in simple, beginner-friendly terms. You'll have a couple of go's at the threading and once you're feeling confident, you'll do some practicing before sewing your cushion cover together. The teacher will be moving around the room the whole time, answering questions, offering tips, and making sure everyone feels supported throughout the class.

✨ We Provide the Machines, Tools & Materials

We wanted to make this first step as easy as possible, so we provide everything for you. That includes high-quality Janome sewing machines, pre-cut fabric, thread, pins, scissors, and all the tools you'll need.

All you have to do is show up and we’ll take care of the rest.

👚 You’ll Make Something You Can Actually Use

At the end of class, you’ll have made a cushion cover from start to finish. It’s not just about practising on scraps - you’ll leave with something practical.

One of our favourite moments in class is when everyone turns their cushion cover the right way out for the first time - there’s always a little gasp or laugh because it looks way better than they expected. That moment of “I actually made this!” is why we love what we do.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 The Class is Friendly, Supportive & Zero Pressure

We know booking something on your own can be nerve-racking, and we totally understand. But you really don’t need to worry. So many people come to this class solo, and we always make sure it feels welcoming and relaxed.

Our teachers are warm, patient, and really conscious of creating a safe space for everyone. If you come on your own, we usually seat you with other solo guests, and fun fact: a lot of students become friends in this class and book the next one together.

We also get a lovely mix of ages, from people in their early 20s right through to guests in their 60s, 70s and even 80s.  Everyone is welcome here.

☕ There’s Tea, Coffee & Good Vibes

Our Redfern studio is designed to feel like a creative escape. There’s music playing, tea and coffee available, and the whole space has a relaxed, happy energy. You’re here to learn, but also to enjoy yourself.

And trust us, the three hours will fly by faster than you expect.

📈 What Happens After This Class?

If you love it (and most people do), your next step is our Intro to Garment Making class - where you’ll learn how to sew a pair of shorts or pants. From there, we now offer a third class to develop your skills even further: Intro to Sewing Tops & Dresses - a fun way to explore more garment-making techniques at your own pace.

If you’re keen to commit from the get-go, check out our Complete Sewing Class Bundle, which includes all three classes and saves you $60 compared to booking them individually.

This three-level sewing pathway is designed to take you from your very first stitch all the way to making your own clothes.

🧷 Time to get sewing!

You don’t need to be creative, crafty, or have a sewing machine at home to take this class. You just need to take the first step by booking in and showing up, and we’ll guide you every step of the way.

Ready to give it a go? Book your spot in our Sewing for Beginners class now and let's start your sewing journey together!
